WHAT AM I DOING HERE?

What Am I Doing Here?

The second question that is asked by seekers as they ponder over

Who am I?

What am I doing here?

Where am I going?

Is it important to know the answers to these questions? Yes if you are a seeker and no if you are just passing through this world aimlessly with no interest as to what holds for you now and the hereafter. Since you have arrived at this page I assume that you are a seeker interested to know the answer to the questions. My last blog addressed the question of “Who Am I? Today we shall address the second question “What Am I Doing Here?”

To begin with you came to this world through no choice of your own. To some life is so miserable that they say I wish I had never been born. Yet human birth is precious since it is the only form of life that is given the opportunity to think and to make choices. At the same time it gives us the opportunity to move upwards the spiritual ladder. With every life we take, we work out our debt which we either carry from previous birth or create in this birth. So this place we call home is only temporary, this physical form we take on is only temporary.
So what do we do? We do the best to we can to face life challenges, as the say “play the game of life and fight till the end”. Buddha said, do good in this life and if there is no afterlife we can say we have done well in this life and should there be an afterlife we can benefit from having done good in this life.

Life is not just growing up, getting educated, getting married, having children and eventually die a meaningless life. Many live such a life unfortunately and they say life is boring. We tend to care too much about the external that we forget about our internal self. We desire many material things and relationships, climbing the corporate ladder chasing for the paper qualification that we are totally stressed out and have no peace of mind. Many people are plagued with this material desires and do not know how to break free from it. They live in gloom and are angry most of the time as they have a sense of an unfulfilled self.

To break from the endless series of misfortunes and gloom we need to work within. You see happiness, peace of mind and harmony are all within and not outside you. You can never find happiness outside you and you can never enjoy the peace and harmony outside you. Yes you go to a place which gives you that ambience, like a resort or sorts but that peace you get remains only when you are there. For true and everlasting happiness and peace of mind need you to work on it internally.

Every human birth we take requires us to work on our internal self and nothing else. You see every material possession that you acquire in your life’s sojourn you cannot bring it with you in your afterlife. If you believe in this than this article makes some sense if not then it will make no sense to you. Whatever you work on internally will remain with you with every life you take because it is a lesson learnt not of the mind but of the Intellect – that part in you that is eternal and is in a constant state of change which is within your control. I am not referring to your soul which is constant and does not change. I am referring to your Intellect and also I am not referring to your intelligence. They are two different things.

What makes up your Intellect?. This entity which dwells in you has five components, Inquiry, Control, Truth and Purity (both internal and external). We shall talk about this entity the intellect some other day. For now just know that the work which you do to correct your internal self changes your intellect. It is this part of you that moves you up the ladder of spirituality – close to your true home. This is the component which many people confuse with that soul. Know that the soul gives you life and with each birth you take, you carry your intellect in whatever level of purity from previous life to this life for the purpose to learn the “Lessons of Life”.

That is the true purpose of why you are here!

Next week we shall address the last question “Where Am I Going?”
